People should believe in kindness, goodness, and love. That's why so many stories were created, just to teach us all good things and feelings of the world. Legends tell about history of nations, nobility and fight against evil. England as other countries has its own legends that exist in literature. One of the most popular characters of old stories is Robin Hood - a hero of English medieval ballads.
According to old stories Robin Hood lived in the times of King Richard I (the Lionheart) as an outlaw shown dressed in green clothes and holding a bow. He resided Sherwood Forest, near Nottingham, with a group of companions -the “Merry Men”- including Little John, Friar Tuck, and his lover Maid Marion. Robin was a brave and generous man, who robbed the rich and helped the poor. There are many stories about Robin and his main enemy- the Sheriff of Nottingham. They used to fight with each other, but the Sheriff was always outwitted although he was doing his best to catch and punish Robin Hood. One yarn tells about a butcher, that Robin met and lent from him a butcher's clothes. Disguised Robin went to Nottingham and sold meat at a low price. He had many customers and this situation made the other sellers angry. They went to the Sheriff and complained about the strange butcher. The Sheriff thought that it could be an opportunity for making some profitable business, so he invited the stranger to a dinner. They were talking about cattle that Robin Hood wanted to sell. It wasn't the truth, what Robin proposed, because he had nothing to sell. He accepted the invitation, because he wanted to robe his bitter enemy. The Sheriff wanted to see the cattle he would buy and that's why Robin Hood took him to the Sherwood Forest. There were his friends in the wood. They helped the character to steel two bags of gold coins from Sheriff.
